Often sought out by athletes, Sports Massage is a type of massage that fits easily within the scope of Deep Tissue and Therapeutic Massage. Many of the same techniques are going to be utilized to help an athlete increase performance, improve joint range-of-motion, speed workout recovery time and help heal from injury.
If massage is being sought to prep for an event, the session will use more invigorating technique, with a lot of compressions, petrissage and facilitated stretching, etc. The primary focus will be on improving circulation to help oxygenate tissues and flexibility to help prevent injury. For a post-event massage, or a session between workouts, a greater focus will be given to relaxing the muscle tissues, decreasing tension, and stretches to maintain joint health.
Just as “Deep Tissue” can be an umbrella term, “Sports Massage” has many different modalities that are often incorporated into as session: Facilitated Stretching, Muscle Energy Technique, Myofascial Release and Applied Kinesiology (just to name a few).
The benefits of a sports massage include:
- Improved Flexibility/Range-of-Motion
- Reduced Risk of Injury
- Enhanced Circulatory Function
- Reduced Recovery Time Between Workouts
- Helps Eliminate Metabolic Byproducts of Exercise
- Decreases Muscle Stiffness and Fatigue
